Totara, the name explained: Totara means to be divided, and is used to describe a tribe or group of people. The huge Māori waka taua (war-canoe), capable of carrying 100 warriors, were often hollowed out from a single Totara log. The Totara was also a symbol of nobility, chieftainship, and social solidarity.
Your adventure will take you to the South Island, where you will conquer the majestic Southern Alps aboard the famous TranzAlpine rail journey and cruise through the breathtaking grandeur of Milford Sound. This tour offers a concise yet deeply rewarding exploration of Aotearoa.
